Healthy Aging? What's Old is New Again!

What do you think of when someone says healthy aging? Most think of people who are elderly but able to enjoy their retirement. Let's dig deeper though, shall we? Let us take two different couples, identical twins which married identical twins. Hey, it's happened more than once.

Couple A:

65 years old, recently retired and looking to travel. Husband A has BMI of 40 while his lovely Wife A has BMI of 36. They really enjoy streaming the travel channel planning where they will go. Meals are delivered from their favorite restaurants, because who has time to cook? They are foodies and they will eat anything anytime, and the more the merrier! He takes blood pressure and cholesterol medications along with a blood thinner after getting a heart stent a few years back. She is taking diabetic medication and cholesterol medication which are both "well controlled". They cannot wait to start their adventures in retirement together.

Couple B:

Husband B and Wife B love food, but colorful foods loaded with fruits and vegetables. They love cooking and meal prepping together in the kitchen after his HIIT class and her cycling class. Podcasts about travel get them through workouts and they discuss their latest listens over dinner each night. They both take supplements that are physician recommended which include resveratrol, nicotinamide, and CoQ10 because they know the anti-aging properties thanks to the The Supplement MD blog. Both also take ADK, a methylated B vitamin, and the best probiotic out there from the same source.

Both couples decided to take a test ordered online which was mailed to their door to see what their biologic age is. The results are in: Husband A is 72, Wife A is 69, Husband B is 58, and wife B is 57. Whoa, but they are identical twins, right? Well, genetically yes, but they have lived different lives and it shows. Couple A can still batten down the hatches and slow things down, but Couple B is soaring into retirement. Yes, biologic age is a thing, and several universities and major clinics are testing these daily along with the right supplements, diets, activities, to see what can be done to turn back the hands of time. In future blogs, we will touch more on biological age and what is being studied.
