Welcome back! Information is flying fast from The Supplement MD blog as well as the rest of the internet, so how do you decide which supplements to start with? Well, I hope to guide you towards what I consider the "Three Must-Have" supplements to build a good base regimen for yourself. If you have read previous blogs, these three will sound familiar.
ADK is my first choice out of the gates. Vitamin D along with vitamin K2 is such a heavy lifter in terms of benefits. This supplement builds your vitamin D levels beyond the accepted minimums, and can help maintain or improve your bone health. So many people walk through my clinic every day find out they are low on Vitamin D. This formulation holds D3 which absorbs better and stays in your system longer. The K2 helps guide calcium into the bone instead of letting you deposit that in arteries which can lead to heart disease or peripheral vascular disease. Downfalls? I have only had 3-4 patients that I have ever had to decrease their supplementation of Vitamin D and it is almost always due to taking multiple forms of the vitamin unknowingly. Read your labels!
Methyl-Guard Plus is a very close second. If you are still taking cyanocobalamin instead of methylcobalamin, please reconsider. Methylated forms of B12 are better absorbed than cyanocobalamin. Why make your body work harder to absorb something? Because it was cheaper? Well, if that is the case, I would argue it will take so much more of the cyano version to reach the same levels as the methylcobalamin that cost is a wash. I digress. While the majority of patients are not deficient, many are below what neurologists would like to see the levels of B12 really exist at. Aside from that, the benefits of brain and nerve health, improved energy, and better building blocks for healthy cells in general all push me to take this daily. The side effects are close to none. Any unused water soluble vitamin such as this is eliminated through the kidneys.
Taking the bronze metal in the list, but not due to lack of benefits would be a really good probiotic. I really prefer FloraSport 20B NSF from Thorne. One main problem of probiotics is declining quality after opening, and many even have to be refrigerated. Thorne solves this with individual foil packing for each capsule, so that the quality of the first capsule taken is the same as the last one taken(as long as they are all before expiration of course). A good probiotic helps restore healthy gut bacteria, which you may have heard called the gut biome or microbiome. Everything we ingest goes into our digestive system, and without the proper balance of certain organisms, main problems arise. Suffer from bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or nausea? It can be the gut biome out of balance. Probiotics are safe for most people and can help replenish and restore you inner defenses.
